Spring is here! Are you thinking of replacing your lawn and outdoor home maintenance equipment? Consider Greenworks electric power tools as an alternative.

As a new homeowner, I’m tired of filling up red gas containers, mixing oil and gas, dealing with dead spark plugs and replacing oil filters, and endlessly trying to start an engine using a pull cable.  So, I looked for an alternative and discovered Greenworks, an America company, which only requires a battery to power their tools. They have a wide variety of products, including DIY power tools and even offer EV off road vehicles.

Lawn mower

The first Greenworks tool I got was a 21″ lawn mower. Since this is my first battery operated machine, it took me a bit to figure out how to get the machine to start. The 80v battery was huge! Helpfully, each battery comes with a status bar telling you how charged it is. You activate the bar either by charging the battery or by hitting a button to the left of the status bar.

It was so weird looking at the motor and only seeing a space for the 80V battery it runs on. There is a red “key” that you need to plug in, followed by both pushing in a power button and compressing a “bail switch” handle to get the engine to start.

Then it roared to life, but more quietly than any gas powered mover I’d used before. The machine trimmed the grass on my lawn beautifully. I would eventually learn not to let the grass grow too tall and wait until the grass had fully dried following a rain, both of which make the engine work harder and run down the battery faster.

Weed Trimmer

The weed trimmer was the next tool I got. This tool has a more simple starting procedure. Just attach the battery, push in the safety button and pull the trigger. It also includes a auto-feed mechanism so can just tap it hard on the ground and the cutting wire cable will feed itself. The trimmer handled everything I put it through, including cutting down our “wild” garden area at the end of the Fall season.

Air (Leaf) Blower

Air blowers are definitely easier to use when you wear them like a backpack. Our lawn gets a TON of leaves from our neighbors property during the Fall and all of them need to be blown or raked to one end of the lawn. So a backpack version would definitely be more efficient for that job. But this hand held one does the trick for our walkway, driveway and garage clearing needs.

Chain Saw

Besides lawn mowers, chainsaws have always caused me the most grief trying to get them started. This Greenworks chainsaw is so easy to start, is equally as quiet as the mower, and cuts through trees without effort. Unlike the other tools, our chainsaw requires direct access to a power supply. Greenworks now makes cordless versions using the same 80v battery as the lawn mower. I have 100′ and 50′ heavy duty power cords allowing me flexibility to bounce around wooded areas around my house. If you need more flexibility, go with a cordless version.

If I have a complaint about any of the Greenworks tools, it’s a common one with anything electric, the batteries don’t last long enough and getting additional ones isn’t cheap.
