It’s important to bring fung shui and functionality to your kitchen, streamlining workflow and making it easy to move between tasks. Considerations include making sure the placement of spices, pots and pans, silverware, garbage can, recycling bin, cleaning supplies, placemats and cutting and cheese boards are logical.
These are three areas to focus on:
- The Kitchen Work Triangle
- The Island
- Keeping Access Easy
We’re excited to share how we’ve brought fung shui and functionality to our kitchen.
1) The kitchen work triangle
The kitchen work triangle includes the refrigerator, sink and stove. Once these locations are established, you can determine where everything else falls into place, from the spice rack to where you store your pots and pans.

In our kitchen, the spice rack is located in between the dishwasher and stove. This makes it easy for us to add spices to our meals while cooking. To the left of the range are three drawers. The top drawer houses the cooking utensils such as a soup ladle, tongs, serving spoons and spatulas. The second drawer stores our oven mitts and pot holders, making them accessible when it’s time to pull out a hot pan from the oven.
Directly above the stove is the microwave, which is surrounded by cabinets. Anything that we don’t use often is located in the harder-to-reach cabinets.
2) Our kitchen Island
Our kitchen island is directly across from the stove and dishwasher. Workflow-wise, this makes it easy for us to do food prep on the island’s countertop and then place the prepared food into the oven directly behind us.

The island has three large drawers in the middle. The top drawer holds our placemats, dish drying mats and our cheese knives. The middle and bottom drawers are where we store our pots, pans and baking sheets. To the right there is a tall cabinet that houses our cutting and cheese boards and above that is a drawer to store our wine openers, matches and vegetable peeler.

To the left is a pull out cabinet containing the garbage can and recycling bin. Above the garbage bin is another small drawer. We have our eating utensils stored there because directly across the way is the dishwasher. It’s very convenient when unloading it.

3) Keeping access easy
The easier to reach cabinets stores our glassware. We also have glassware and mugs in the cabinets right above our lazy susan, which houses our cooking commodities such as oil and apple cider vinegar. Underneath the sink are our cleaning supplies, garbage bags, and dish washing soap and detergent. The three drawers in between the lazy susan and the kitchen cabinet under the sink are for odds and ends such as coasters and sandwich and freezer bags.

Our plates and bowls are in the cabinets above the toaster, to the left of the refrigerator. The drawers underneath the countertop are where we have placed wax paper and tin foil.
The lower cabinets are where we keep household appliances such a juicer and a blender. We also use that space to store our large serving trays. Above the refrigerator are two hard-to-reach cabinets. We have a mixer and large salad spinner in there as well as a very large salad bowl. Unless we have company over or we are making a cake, we don’t really find ourselves using these kitchen must-haves.

We love the flow of our kitchen and how easy it is for us to cook while we are entertaining guests. Tell us how you’ve brought fung shui and functionality to your kitchen.
