How A New HVAC System Improved The Climate In Our Home

A weird aspect about our new 2003 Mid-Hudson Valley home: the builders never completed the HVAC System installation! While there was duct work in place in the walls and ceilings, the condenser unit and heating pump were never installed.  We relied on oil to heat the house all Winter and there was no A/C during the Summer, just ceiling fans in each room. While we could tolerate temperatures in the 80’s with the ceiling fans, once temperatures reached the 90’s, it became unbearable. We knew we needed to improve the climate in our home with a new HVAC system.

What you need to know about HVAC systems…

An HVAC system works to remove humidity in your home when you want cooler temps and pumps warm air in when you want warmer temps.  HVAC systems are either Ducted or Ductless and there are 4 areas to consider when determining what’s right for your home: capacity (tons), efficiency (sheer), noise (buzzing) and reliability (does it get the job done). Here is a link with more helpful info.

Our house is 1900 Sq. Ft. Usually the air handler is located in your attic or basement. Our air handler is located in a second floor closet space!

We spent more than a month shopping around for companies to review the project and provide estimates and decided on a local company DS Home Services to complete the installation.

We settled on a 3.5 ton, 15 Sheer Bosch 1 stage air handler and heat pump condenser, which is sufficient until temps reach below 30 degrees.

The new HVAC system made such a difference…

We noticed the difference immediately and, so far, our heating and cooling costs have decreased.  Because we’re on a single zone system, we’ve kept the air vents on the second floor closed so the air flows downstairs first.  There’s still about a 5 degree temperature difference between the two floors, but we’re comfortable. We’re so happy we could improve the climate in our home with the new HVAC system!
